Haiti Telethon Raises Millions

By Brock Hileman Hileman

Total contributions aren’t known yet as they still continue to flow in but estimates vary between $9.4 and $16 million. What a generous nation we are. I’ve always been proud to be an American, the world leader in human rights, freedom, creativity and innovation. Take pride in our foreign affairs, although far from perfect we stand up for the underdog when barbarism and cowardice threatens.

The tough criticism we endure daily from others is founded in dictatorially induced poverty and jealousy. There is no fairer treatment for each and every individual than there is on our soil. Bear in mind that while Iran, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Libya and all the others speak out strongly against American capitalistic and imperialistic greed, their contribution to the well being of this world is pitiful. The Haiti Telethon was able to raise more help for the millions of Haitian victims than these critics combined. To date I believe Americans have given more than $250 million personally and over $500 million nationally. Not including the personnel commitment from our military and Health Care industries.

It’s easy to get apathetic about our roll in the world when it is under attack from all sides. There is no doubt we are not perfect, and learning from criticism only makes us better and stronger. If we examine our roll in the world there is plenty to be proud of; the American contribution to science and medicine is matched by no other. While other nations were copying our assembly line manufacturing processes, we were walking on the moon. When Europe was under siege, twice, there was American blood protecting their freedoms. The list is endless.

It is foolish to compare ourselves to the rest of the world. We as a nation operate on a whole different level. We are the most generous, most creative, most innovative, most productive, most compassionate and the greatest human rights advocating nation that has ever existed.

Take pride in the criticism directed at us because its source stems from the political pressures exerted by the oppressed looking to join us or become like us.

Brock Hileman promotes the wilderness experience and the philosophy that learning to survive and thrive outdoors. The recent events in Haiti and California stress the importance of having a plan should such a catastrophe befall your community. Contributor's Note

I'm angered by the critisism directed at us from nations that are puny in character and insignificant in achievment. It's sad that critisism is all they can offer this world.

This article had me laughing so loudly that my five-year-old son keeps asking what's so funny. America is detested in many places worldwide precisely because people like you - and unfortunately there are many people like you - have such a self-righteous, boastful and condescending attitude towards the rest of the world.

The problem is that while the US is trying to rid the world of all evil it sucks countries like the UK in too. We are now seeing terrorist acts which are occuring partly because we join in with America fighting other people`s battles, and we end up suffering for it. I like the US, certainly have a lot of time for American people, but the politicians need to act with more restraint sometimes I feel.
